Day 13: Jacob Does it AGAIN, Jesus and the Sword, Psalm 9

Trying to play a little catch-up from here on out with the WWW daily readings. I started late and knew I’d be a bit hard-pressed to keep up, but we’ll close the gap. Today’s Bible reading (we’re following along the Walking With Wainright Bible reading plan) takes us through Jacob’s famous deception of his father, Jesus says he didn’t come to bring peace but the sword, and Psalm 9.

If you’re looking to get more active in the Word and be held accountable, hang with me and let’s get this done!

Day 13: Genesis 27:1-28:22, Matthew 10:34-11:15, Psalms 9:1-6

Genesis 27:1-28:22

The classic story of Jacob pulling one over on his brother Esau yet again, first it was giving a meal for a birthright, now it was to use a little old school identity theft in order to trick his dad into giving him his blessing before he died.

It’s Rebekah who puts the plan into motion and “commands” her son to trick Isaac. Isaac is skeptical, and there are chances for Jacob to not go through with it, but he does.

Right when Jacob pulls off the deception, Esau comes in. He’s furious when he finds out what has happened and wants to kill his own brother. Rebekah tells Jacob to go, until his brother’s anger subsides.

Esau later gets married simply to spite his father (takes on extra wives).

God keeps his promise to Abraham alive and speaks to Jacob about what He plans to do, and Jacob finally fully embraces God.

Matthew 10:34-11:15

Jesus talks about why he came, and it wasn’t to hand out candy to everyone who asked. I say this because that is often the perception many people have of God. But Jesus says he came to bring the sword. That families will turn on one another because of him, and what it looks like to follow Jesus – we must put him ahead of ALL else, even our own loved ones.

Jesus then goes on to talk about the fact that there are rewards — and it all involves some charitable action towards others.

Homage is paid to John the Baptist, but Jesus adds that even the least in Heaven is greater than JtB.

Psalm 9:1-6

David begins with a series of “I will” statements… I will give thanks/be glad/tell of/sing praise. Followed by all the works of His hands.

We have the easy job, God does all the heavy lifting!
